“I Love God, But Not That Much!”

It’s easy to say you love God and Jesus. But how much do we love him? Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). So doing what he commands is the most basic way of showing that we love him. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3).

Even though his commandments under the new covenant are not burdensome, many baulk at doing them. Humans being the way they are, we all prefer to do things our own way. So when it comes to loving God, the actions of many say, “Well, I love God, but not that much!” Doing things God’s way is just too much for some. But putting aside our own preferences to do what God wants is essential, if we truly love him – if he is truly our King. “Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth…The one who keeps his commandments abides in him, and he in him” (1 John 3:18,24).
